First week back at work. Too churned up about it all to make much sense at the moment. Don't have my camera with me so no pretty pictures of London town. Back when I'm out of the vortex.<br />

Hello everybody,<br />
<br />
When we lived in New York, one of our favourite weekend pastimes was to have brunch. There are so many places for this in Manhattan, ranging from chi chi restaurants with massive queues outside to old school diners where everything is supersized and you don't need to eat for a week afterwards.<br />
<br />
So, I was a bit worried when we decamped to the house by the sea that we'd have nowhere to get our weekly fix of excellent coffee and tasty treats while we flicked through the sunday papers. I need not have fretted. Because not very far from where we live is the lovely and amazing <a href="http://pumpstreetbakery.com/">Pump Street Bakery</a>.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8046711643/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="DSC_0957 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0957" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8178/8046711643_d80f630233.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You know you're in trouble when even the lighting excites you</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Their sourdough bread is just delicious, and they do a fab bacon rocket and lemon mayo bap. Their savoury snacks really are good - fresh ingredients, locally sourced, with perfectly balanced flavours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8046722707/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0951 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0951" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8462/8046722707_b240034bfd.jpg" width="427" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But the real treats, the things that keep us going back there time after time, are the sweet treats. Doughnuts filled with jams - rhubarb or raspberry - or creme anglaise, or brownies or meringues. Eccles cakes don't normally have me salivating at the sight of them, but one bite of these and I was hooked. Every time I go, I debate whether to have an Eccles cake or a Portuguese nata (I'm a sucker for custard...)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's a fire in winter and outside seating in the summer months. And the simple decor perfectly complements the good simple food...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But the best bit for me is Cedric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8046700923/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0189 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0189" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8031/8046700923_e6abaf8645.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From Wednesdays to Sundays, Cedric can be found around and about, selling bread and treats to those who can't make it to the bakery.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8047811197/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0030 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0030" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8449/8047811197_db7b78c625.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8047823824/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0027 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0027" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8462/8047823824_da976afda5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, you see, I needn't have worried. Brunch is taken care of wherever we are.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8046700318/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0200 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0200" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8035/8046700318_f762cd741b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And you needn't take my word for how good Pump Street is. The bakery has a finalist in the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00zxv3j">BBC's Food and Farming Awards</a>. Hope it wins.</div>

Hello everyone,<br />
<br />
Thanks so much for your good wishes on my (old) new job. I'm excited and nervous and still very bemused at this turn of events and am trying to make the most of my last few days before starting work on Monday. Mr. P. is away at the moment so I am quietly getting ready and doing a bit of writing and trying to reassure myself that my brain won't have turned to mush during my time off. And I have had a project to work on and now something to show you. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8071193620/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0125 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0125" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8176/8071193620_db6fe9858b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been knitting. You may remember earlier in the year I knit a sweet little cardigan from <a href="http://www.debbieblissonline.com/Book.asp?bid=78">Debbie Bliss's Knitter's Year</a>. This was it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8071268645/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_0143 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_0143" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8178/8071268645_856f1f41a8.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, when we discovered a few months back that a little girl had come into the family, I knew just the thing I wanted to make. The pink cardigan was made of cotton yarn, but that felt wrong for this time of year. But then the shop I went to for inspiration had the exact cardigan knit in baby cashmerino, and I knew that would be perfect.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8071204565/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0124 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0124" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8032/8071204565_8afe428c98.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was on a deadline because I wanted Mr. P. to take it with him when he went away, so I've been knitting like a demon over the last few weeks. I had given up all hope of finishing it, but then a stinking cold kept me inside last week, so I managed it with, oh, hours to spare! (It wasn't helped by having cold induced knitting dyslexia which meant that I cast off the front and back the wrong way around so that the left front piece hung on one side of the back piece but the right side faced the other way - even now I can't explain it properly...).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And I have discovered in the process that I like to do things in twos. I made <a href="http://www.noknittedknickers.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/cue-drum-roll.html">a bag</a>. And then <a href="http://www.noknittedknickers.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/bit-of-cheat-but-ta-dah.html">another</a>. A <a href="http://www.noknittedknickers.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/requiem-for-my-trousers-ta-dah.html">cushion cover</a>. And then <a href="http://www.noknittedknickers.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/giveaway-owl-anyone.html">another</a>. And I have plans for another <a href="http://www.noknittedknickers.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/defiance.html">wavery ripple scarf</a>. Oh, and another <a href="http://www.noknittedknickers.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/glow.html">lampshade</a>. Okay, so it's hardly mass production. But there's something satisfying about figuring something out and doing all the swearing and ripping etc. the first time around, and then tackling it the second time knowing roughly what you're doing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As long as you don't have a cold.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, here it is. My Noah cardigan. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Can't wait to see baby J in it.</div>

PS Thank you for all your lovely comments and helpful suggestions as to what to do with the granny square blanket. I suspect that it will remain as it is, at least until after the other second time around projects I have planned.</div>

Hello everyone,<br />
<br />
Today, I was going to tell you about the Aldeburgh food festival, or to trumpet the recent success of <a href="http://pumpstreetbakery.com/">the Pump Street Bakery</a>, (more another day) but instead I want to share some news with you.<br />
<br />
I started my professional life as a corporate lawyer. I was pretty good at it, but for one reason or another I wasn't very happy in my twenties, and part of my quest to be happy involved leaving my corporate job in search of new experiences elsewhere. So, for the last ten years, I worked for the UN. Richly rewarding, at times frustrating, but I have never regretted my decision to leave and I wouldn't have traded the last ten years for anything. <br />
<br />
But now I have returned to the UK and have been wondering what to do next. I wanted and needed to take a career break when we came back to England, but now I need to work again. I had a coffee with a friend of a friend at my old law firm to talk about clients of his that might be interested in my experience. And at the end of our discussion, he offered me a job himself. In my old firm. <br />
<br />
Never, ever, did I expect to go back. And never did I think I would be excited at the prospect. But I am. It will be in a new role, and will be a challenge, and it's temporary. But that's just fine. <br />
<br />

Hello there,<br />
<br />
Firstly, thank you for all your lovely comments on my last post. In the (too long) break from blogging, I pretty much stopped taking photos at all, but in coming back to the fold I realise just how much I enjoy it, and how important a part of blogging it is for me. Taking photographs makes me really see things and I love it.<br />
<br />
Secondly, welcome, welcome to my new followers. It's lovely to have you here.<br />
<br />
So, today, I have lots more photos of a market. Because finally, I have uploaded my images of the <a href="http://www.debenevents.com/">vintage market</a> I went to recently in Woodbridge. Oh, my! You know there are some days when you visit a flea market or vintage fair, when you traipse around scanning ahead from stall to stall and reach the end and wish you hadn't bothered? Well, this was the exact opposite of all that.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And even as I look through these photos, I see all sorts of things that I somehow missed ,and want to go back to. But before you feel too sorry for the opportunity lost, let me show you what I DID buy....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started slowly with this sweet little dish, made of Welsh pottery. Love the flowers. Love the dots. Love everything about it really. (And it didn't cost a lot.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8015340831/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0109 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0109" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8450/8015340831_cd5c85291e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I spied these two lurking in the shadows. No House by the Sea should be without them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8015329971/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0111 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0111" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8174/8015329971_251d9bbf7d.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I happened upon a stall selling tiles made locally in the 1950s in my favourite colour of the moment. (Can't seem to get enough of mustard...). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8015323639/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0112 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0112" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8461/8015323639_8f028f8d93.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
By this point I was giving myself a stern talking to about the Age of Austerity ruling in the House of NKK etc, but the woman in the bird's nest hat simply smiled.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8015314179/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0114 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0114" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8460/8015314179_02fb180bba.jpg" width="427" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that was my final purchase. Final final. Until I saw this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8015306660/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0116 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0116" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8454/8015306660_823ba196cd.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Really, I shouldn't be let out. Clearly, I cannot be trusted. But in my defence, I defy any of you to have walked away without this beautiful blanket. I know I should just have gone home and whipped one up myself. But <a href="http://www.noknittedknickers.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/making-winter-tale-of-three-blankets.html">we all know how long that's going to take</a>... And this is made of pure wool. And in such lovely colours. And I couldn't buy more than a few of balls of yarn for the price I paid for it. So really, it absolutely had to come home with me. Don't you think?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/8015287595/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0119 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0119" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8295/8015287595_d6b4056ff0.jpg" width="427" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, now I need some advice, please. As you can see, it's a little too small for our stupidly big bed (for which, I have Mr. P to thank). And I am wondering about the best way to add to it. I know I could just add to the border. Or I could make granny squares in a single colour (probably either red or navy to tie the room together (in a non matchy match way, hopefully) and sew these in a sort of mega border around the outside, expanding the blanket by a granny square width all around, which I think might do the trick. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What do you think?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
C.x</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
PS the lovely Rebecca from <a href="http://poshyarn.co.uk/blog/">Posh Yarn</a> was there and I chatted briefly but then ran away in a fit of shyness (more of that another day). Sorry.</div>

Hello everybody,<br />
<br />
When I was down in London Town for Handmade Renegade I finally managed to do something that was on my list of London lovely things to do fo the longest time: visit Borough Market.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEBN1aGjFKjSJRcDUawKwClET5P2nKrqk0tJL5AYJivN0_z-dzbSB9uFOs9zwdMbErQ_GDyEht8bWGsuXNjQ1RZBRjbaIrsZpbsXw3NREcXypvJVN-dbkTbT3ENMGwyLezwTTSEl-o7g/s1600/DSC_0144.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="586" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEBN1aGjFKjSJRcDUawKwClET5P2nKrqk0tJL5AYJivN0_z-dzbSB9uFOs9zwdMbErQ_GDyEht8bWGsuXNjQ1RZBRjbaIrsZpbsXw3NREcXypvJVN-dbkTbT3ENMGwyLezwTTSEl-o7g/s640/DSC_0144.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I could tell you about the posh coffee, or the delicate first picked leaves of darjeeling tea I tasted, or the amazing breads and cakes, or the granola or home made jams. Or the amazing butchers and fishmongers. Oh, and the cheese. But instead I thought I'd just show you lots of photos to drool over. Just in time for dinner.</div>

A feast, I tell you!<br />

There were other things too around the market....<br />

Hello everybody,<br />
<br />
Hope you're having a fab weekend. I have had the most lovely couple of days. Lots to tell you, but for now, just a quick post because I am about to get in a car and hurtle up the motorway to Yorkshire for a few days. Trip to Harrogate planned. V excited.<br />
<br />
But before I get to that, let me tell you about a fantabulous craft fair that's on in London this weekend.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68556805@N05/7989930306/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_0169 by noknittedknickers, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0169" height="427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8176/7989930306_f5e11aa98c.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Went yesterday with my sister and niece. I was a big fan from my time in the States, written about <a href="http://noknittedknickers.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/handmade-renegade.html">here</a> so was very excited to see what London had to offer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Look!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Those ice lollies are now on their way to my niece's bedroom wall.<br />

Folksy had thoughtfully provided the materials for those overcome with the need to craft. Check out the sausage dog!<br />

But the highlight of the day was meeting the lovely Emma from <a href="http://silverpebble-jewellery.blogspot.co.uk/">Silverpebble</a> whose jewellery is just delightful. My first real life blog encounter - my niece was very excited. (Sorry there is no photo of her fab stall. I was a bit shy to ask.) Were we not living in the age of austerity in the House of NKK, I would have bought the spinny windmill. And I have plans when normal salaried service resumes to attend a workshop with Emma. For now, it was a delight just to look.</div>

Hello everybody,<br />
<br />
I owe you a post on the treasures I found at the vintage fair I went to on Saturday but haven't taken the photos yet. Thought you might like to see my new favourite place instead. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://www.thewalledgarden.co.uk/">The Walled Garden</a> is minutes from my house and it took me until last week to go. I've been three times since. It sells plants. But to call it a garden centre doesn't do it justice. It is beautiful and enchanted. Inspiring and soothing. Tranquil and vibrant. It is everything you might need to begin to create your own garden. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyiQrwEJmUDVkritQxX6I9Y0-eBk-o3-fJWkQ9eCtW6MRBY9wd4dk7M-ngekckZGcAF9-DDFjOowL7wZZfyRM6Pt4dVeOip_ge66_4xKuualHbvK2F2ICZqrvMePBIj3WD1_QILs5-RA/s1600/DSC_0035.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyiQrwEJmUDVkritQxX6I9Y0-eBk-o3-fJWkQ9eCtW6MRBY9wd4dk7M-ngekckZGcAF9-DDFjOowL7wZZfyRM6Pt4dVeOip_ge66_4xKuualHbvK2F2ICZqrvMePBIj3WD1_QILs5-RA/s640/DSC_0035.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>
In short, it has given me the jolt of enthusiasm I needed to engage with my own wilderness. The old lady house by the sea came with its own garden. My first. And I have been terrified of it. The old lady was quite the gardener in her day and passersby stop and tell me that the garden used to be beautiful. Yes indeed. For a year I have looked out the windows at the devastation wreaked by the builders, the rain and the mad growth spurt that followed, so that the plants and weeds are now bickering with each other for space. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9lGYQWL0WjGhzNeHQ-j-5nNKpryPbmV77sCnAc57b7wVJrMuY5bjvDGpWTC1-lxeWZcDZJHizgx5zKiwaReol7Oh69TT6P4HGn2X0_RP2ivUTW69ksazF9IRLEJgUWxmJyhHHj8Kgkw/s1600/DSC_0545.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9lGYQWL0WjGhzNeHQ-j-5nNKpryPbmV77sCnAc57b7wVJrMuY5bjvDGpWTC1-lxeWZcDZJHizgx5zKiwaReol7Oh69TT6P4HGn2X0_RP2ivUTW69ksazF9IRLEJgUWxmJyhHHj8Kgkw/s640/DSC_0545.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Builders - gotta love 'em</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And if I'm honest, I don't like much of what's here. It's nothing against the old lady. But, well, it's an old lady's garden. Not mine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzz3WC6m3gQrLBGhnysQz8N6Y_pM4GL92dVwT1LVNNL5ct1bsl-YEr9djq4wcr-8cc48vKXJZqGbHjDlzlgIKdzeMZmZrsGIxtVa3KtOkE1FvSYosRRQVzOQFbH9MvD9LSee6Nr8D80w/s1600/DSC_0082.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzz3WC6m3gQrLBGhnysQz8N6Y_pM4GL92dVwT1LVNNL5ct1bsl-YEr9djq4wcr-8cc48vKXJZqGbHjDlzlgIKdzeMZmZrsGIxtVa3KtOkE1FvSYosRRQVzOQFbH9MvD9LSee6Nr8D80w/s640/DSC_0082.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So this morning, I got up really early and attacked this small bed. It's just outside the living room, and you can just see the double doors we had put in which open onto the garden. And this bed depressed the hell out of me. Not sure why. It just wasn't very joyful.<br />
<br />
An hour or so later, I had this.<br />
<br />

Better, but not great.<br />

<br />
I'd ordered lots of bulbs, so I buried them in the hope that next Spring will be a colourful one - pink narcissi - who knew! And don't you just love rununculus?<br />
<br />
And once I'd got the bulbs sorted, I planted up some flowers. (That spiky thing is a red hot poker - love.) I can't wait for next Spring to see what happens.<br />

Not Walled Garden standard. But a start.<br />

Oh, it's good to be back. Having a lovely time catching up with everybody. And isn't this week just fab? I feel like we've concentrated a whole summer's worth of sunshine and joy into the last 7 days. The sun has shone and the coast is glorious.<br />
<br />
How good of you to remember that we have embarked on a little venture in the House of NKK.<br />

<a href="http://www.bestofsuffolk.co.uk/the-yardarm-aldeburgh.asp">The Yardarm</a> has been open for business for a few months now. We welcomed our first guests for Easter. <br />

And then it rained. And rained. And rained some more. Nobody came and it was awful. <br />
<br />
Thankfully, it picked up after that and we have been busy all Summer.<br />

In September, Aldeburgh is at its loveliest. With the kids gone back to school, the Summer rush is dying down, but there's still plenty to do. <br />
<br />
Thought you might be tempted to come and see for yourself. The <a href="http://www.aldeburghfoodanddrink.co.uk/">Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival</a> is a two day feast at the end of September (29th and 30th), with fringe events running in nearby locations over the following two weeks. And to get you in the mood, when you arrive at The Yardarm, you'll find a decent bottle of wine. And cake. Specifically, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/9294855/Fresh-gingerbread-with-lemon-icing.html">this cake</a>. <br />

Hello everybody,<br />
<br />
I had thought that my blogging days were over, what with one thing and another (mostly to do with feeling suddenly like I had nothing to say anymore now that I can no longer distract you from my woeful crafting attempts with tales of Manhattan). But in the last week, at least three ideas for posts have sort of fallen across my path, and so I thought I'd give it a go again. I can make no promises, or at least none that that you'd believe given recent performance, but here goes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We are living in an age of austerity in the House of NKK. Gone are the days of extravagance and whimsy. We are experiencing cut backs and general frugality, the price paid for a career sabbatical. I introduced a ban on magazine buying a while back, so haven't been browsing through my usual glossies of late. But last week I cracked and bought Homes & Antiques (this girl knows how to have a good time. Oh, yes). <br />

And immediately I thought of the women of blogland. For inside is the story of <a href="http://shaunarichardson.com/home/">Shauna Richardson</a>, whose crochet animals are on an epic scale. The photos in the article show some beautiful creatures, all crocheted straight onto scale forms rather than fitted like a sock afterwards. Amazing.<br />

But the really amazing thing that has everyone in the know (not me, obviously) buzzing is <a href="http://www.lionheartproject.com/home/">the Lion Heart Project</a>, which is on show outside the Natural History Museum until 10 September. She's made these incredible larger than life crochet lions, now housed in a glass case in front of the museum. </div>

Today is the first day in six weeks that I have logged into NKK. And I'm not entirely sure why. I have wondered if I should come clean and write to say that NKK is being put into storage but I'm not sure I want to. And yet I haven't written. I have some theories as to why, none of which are very interesting or laudable or blog-worthy. I guess I'm in a transition phase and I'm not sure that I should inflict the ups and downs that that implies with any of you.<br />
<br />
But, well, today is my birthday, and I woke up this morning to a lovely present - a Versatile Blogger Award from <a href="http://agirlinwinter.wordpress.com/">A Girl in Winter</a>. Thank you! I have to get my head around who to pass it on to and the rest of the rules, but for now, know that I am delighted to accept and a little chastened that I haven't been writing. So, maybe on this my birthday, I can reacquaint myself with something that has brought me such joy in the 16 months since I started NKK. And tell you a bit about what I've been up to.<br />
<br />
For ages, Mr. P and I were working hard to get <a href="http://www.bestofsuffolk.co.uk/the-yardarm-aldeburgh.asp">our new holiday let</a> up and running. The house by the sea is now open for business. Come and see us!<br />
<br />
And I've been writing. Thank you all SO much for your kind words and encouragement about my news of getting published. My story, The Quickening, can be found in <a href="http://www.abdn.ac.uk/riiss/publications/causeway.shtml">Causeway/Cabhsair</a>, a journal of Irish and Scottish writing published by the University of Aberdeen. Much excitement in the house of NKK at first seeing my name in print! It's lit a fire under me so that I'm spending lots of my day reading and writing at the moment. And I''m discovering that writing doesn't really lend itself to blogging. "I sat at my desk for hours and wrote a whole page..." You begin to get the picture.<br />
<br />
And that's basically been it. Well, not quite. There's been the WI and a new book club and my first forays into gardening, but all that for another day.<br />
<br />
For now, I leave you with a few photos, the content of which fill me with wonder.<br />

<br />
The other day, a fox spent the afternoon sunbathing in next door's back garden. And a great tit (or maybe it's blue?) has chosen the laurel tree by our front door in which to build her tiny, exquisite nest. As for the last one - this is the view from the upstairs front bedroom. Almost worth all that rain we've had.<br />
<br />
More soon, hopefully.<br />
<br />
Off to do some catching up with what you've all been up to.<br />

Okay, so the last post was a bit of a cop out, I realise. It's all very well telling you about the latest shopping find, but that doesn't tell you anything about what I've been up to.<br />
<br />
I could tell you about the plans to turn part of the house into self-catering holiday accommodation (Mr. P is tiling as I write). I could tell you about the fab new WI that's being set up. I could tell you about the green curry I've just made (only a day late for St. Patrick's day). I could tell you about the interview that I have on Tuesday. I could tell you about the garden which is being whipped into shape by two very nice men who are working their way through their own weight in teabags, or the bike ride I took this morning along the wetland path.<br />
<br />
But I won't. Instead I will tell you that I have had the best news. I am to have a short story published. It's just a small literary journal - not exactly the New Yorker, you understand. But still. Someone who knows nothing about me has read something I've written and likes it enough to want it for their magazine. Shucks.<br />
<br />
I almost don't want to tell anyone in case they've made a mistake. But I have read and re-read the email and it seems that yes, they like my story very much and will be sending me along a proof to check before it goes to press. So, there you have it. I am a writer. The man says so.<br />

No, no, this won't do at all! If I'm going to have a blog, the very least I can do is write in it once in a while, no? And I can't even give you a decent excuse, beyond, well, you know, stuff and nonsense getting in the way. Sorry. Sniff.<br />
<br />
Right, so what have you all been up to? Me - I'm beginning to think we made a big mistake buying the House by the Sea. It's fast becoming apparent that what we should have bought was a house boat. Yes indeed. It has rained since Sunday, pretty much non-stop. Living in the dryest county in England, I know I'm supposed to think that's A Good Thing. But enough now. Really.<br />
<br />
So I thought you might like a little injection of colour. Those who've dropped by NKK before must be wondering how I'm managing without <a href="http://www.anthropologie.eu/uk/page/home">my favourite store</a>. Well, fear not. It hasn't taken me long to find Suffolk's answer to Anthropologie. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX4G2P0j4_pLkuCXPtj9fL3V7X2dFkcKF4jn3hyphenhyphen_3so9TlTKPjcjkLQJ9ihTAYBWdIGzNXt3tyrg5ZWD15r18v9JbJVCUZFLGh1KWR8S_MJ3Wgjg2wYWUfo3yr0e9YIay6-PCRpRvZBQ/s1600/IMG_0153.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX4G2P0j4_pLkuCXPtj9fL3V7X2dFkcKF4jn3hyphenhyphen_3so9TlTKPjcjkLQJ9ihTAYBWdIGzNXt3tyrg5ZWD15r18v9JbJVCUZFLGh1KWR8S_MJ3Wgjg2wYWUfo3yr0e9YIay6-PCRpRvZBQ/s640/IMG_0153.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://www.snapemaltings.co.uk/">Snape Maltings</a> is 5 minutes' drive from where I live. There's a rather lovely looking walk across the wetlands from my town to Snape, and if it ever stops raining, I may even drag Mr. P out for a ramble, with promises of cake at the other end.<br />
<br />
It's one of the main attractions in the area as it hosts an impressive series of musical events throughout the calendar. Cunningly, the developers also realised its retail potential.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh885hzxEZj1g0zMSUMtw0PbUkF-ufhfesdTb-7Fkr9D5R3lE8b_IoZY9qPfc3HxAujzv2AEO7_D1mp4Qw8X651Gq0hwNbItb5TZJBLwNgjSF4x7MhHVsLUdVGbhraSX_-U4wDOPH2j8Q/s1600/IMG_0157.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh885hzxEZj1g0zMSUMtw0PbUkF-ufhfesdTb-7Fkr9D5R3lE8b_IoZY9qPfc3HxAujzv2AEO7_D1mp4Qw8X651Gq0hwNbItb5TZJBLwNgjSF4x7MhHVsLUdVGbhraSX_-U4wDOPH2j8Q/s640/IMG_0157.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
So now it houses everything from garden products to furniture, with lots of pretty frou frous wherever you look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And isn't this enamel chandelier affair just the business?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
It's the kind of place you take visitors to, have lunch overlooking the vast shop floor and then come away with the perfect little something to take home as a momento. So you see, Anthropologie fans need not worry. I am right at home.<br />
<br />
Back soon, I promise.<br />

We don't go in much for St. Valentine's Day celebrations in the House of NKK. Anyone who's been in the States between Christmas and 14 February and watched the commercial machine crank up the volume on Hallmark-style romance will understand why. That, and an in-built contrariness about being told to love each other NOW. So the heart collection isn't bought on St. Valentine's Day but at random days of the year, when I see a heart that calls to me. And so it was, just after Christmas, that the tinkle of this lovely proved too difficult to resist.<br />

Hello there,<br />
<br />
Last week was a bit crap so I am a bit behind on my blogging (again). But it is a new week and I have given myself a vigorous shake and am Getting On With It now. <br />
<br />
So, to business. Welcome welcome to my new followers. How lovely to have you here. And thank you thank you thank you for all your comments on my blogiversary. In my last year of primary school, our head nun used to refer to scatty girls as <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 16px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Féileacán (fay-le-cawn), and </span></span>I sometimes think I should rename my blog accordingly. I have all these grand ideas about posts that I carry around in my head, but somehow they don't get written except in snatches so looking back on the last year, you might be forgiven for thinking that there is no rhyme or reason to this blog. But the good news is that you don't seem to mind. And that makes me very chuffed indeed. You also seem to like my photographs, which is great because I am always happy with a camera in my hand. And it pleases me that you like the name because even now, a year on, I love NKK. So the butterfly can flit off.<br />
<br />
Anyway, the thing I hate about giveaways is that not everyone gets a prize. But according to the random generator (Mr. P.) the lucky number here was 10, so if Annie from <a href="http://knitsofacto.blogspot.com/">Knitsofacto</a> could get in touch with your address, I'll parcel up the book and send it on its way. I suspect that Annie is more of a knitter, but this book seems like the perfect enticement to get sewing. Congratulations to Annie.<br />
<br />
And in keeping with the randomness, on this bleak and grey day I thought you might like these beauties, seen recently in a nearby former RAF airfield.<br />

Hello there,<br />
<br />
I have a sore throat and earache. Whoa is me. I've slept most of the day today. But the weekend - the weekend was a delight. Much rummaging and pottering and gossiping and drinking and eating and general merriment. Which probably led to the grots today, but worth it. We had a sprinkling of snow on Saturday. Enough to make it look pretty by the sea without too much disruption.<br />

Hello everybody,<br />
<br />
Brrr. Hope you're managing to stay warm. It's <i>sooo</i> cold here, but beautifully sunny so that's okay. And I'm trying to contain my excitement because we have visitors coming for the weekend. Two whole days of eating and drinking and chatting and general girliness. And it's finally given us the incentive to sort out the bedroom that we've been using as a dumping ground since we moved in. So this is how it looks now. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made the lampshade this morning. Can I just say that again - I made the lampshade this morning. Yes indeed. As my sister will tell you, I am a bit obsessed with lampshades at the moment. It's so difficult to find nice ones for anything approaching a reasonable price. And then it occurred to me that I could make my own. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a bit fiddly and I needed to call in Mr. P to help at some point. I suspect it's the kind of thing that gets easier with practice. Which is good because I have a second kit and am waiting for some Etsy fabric to cover it with. </div>

I knit that. Isn't it cute? It's for a little girl who is 12 weeks old this week. So it's a good job I finished it, because foolishly I chose the smallest size (3-6 months). So it was now or never really.<br />

It was pretty straightforward for the beginner knitter that I am. I only needed help at the very end. But I found someone at the crafty group I've joined who showed me what to do. Such a satisfying feeling.<br />
<br />
And I think it really can't be beaten for cuteness.<br />

Will keep you posted. And thanks everyone for your lovely comments on my growing blanket collection. I wouldn't be doing any of this without you and I'm chuffed to bits that you take the time to comment on what I get up to.<br />

<br />
As no doubt you already know, <a href="http://silverpebble-jewellery.blogspot.com/2011/10/making-winter.html">Silverpebble and Thrifty Household</a> have come up with the wonderful idea of sharing what we like about winter to banish any signs of gloom in the months of short days and long nights. For me, winter is all about cosiness. And cosiness requires blankets. <br />
<br />
I have lots of catching up to do with all the posts I have in my head. For ages, I've been wanting to show you this loveliness.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWcqbgSZn9-2VsjugZM7iAOXjSnOpddoXvnsC-55NuU_NaylJHkR6muFka7GT-Kf7mcPrI8WRJ9QQFiYHcr_CFGrNpKPOzeJE3atQ5OjomcmC4p0RKZYF1VSRgI_nSNPV8xilCxTs0RA/s1600/DSC_1034.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWcqbgSZn9-2VsjugZM7iAOXjSnOpddoXvnsC-55NuU_NaylJHkR6muFka7GT-Kf7mcPrI8WRJ9QQFiYHcr_CFGrNpKPOzeJE3atQ5OjomcmC4p0RKZYF1VSRgI_nSNPV8xilCxTs0RA/s640/DSC_1034.jpg" width="427" /></a></div>
<br />
My Mum found this blanket in a charity shop and gave it to me just before Christmas. Isn't it just beautiful? It's in pristine condition and made of cotton, so we bunged it into the washing machine to get rid of the old lady whiff and it came out fresh and spotless. It makes me smile every time I go into that room. And it's got a lovely weightiness to it that you need sometimes in a blanket.<br />
<br />
You may remember that I wrote about coveting a blanket from <a href="http://www.thewhitecompany.com/">The White Company</a> <a href="http://noknittedknickers.blogspot.com/2011/03/of-guns-and-crochet.html">here</a>. Well, they had a sale awhile back, just at the point when the House by the Sea was at its most chaotic. Now, I had no business at all buying a blanket at that point when we were still at the stage of choosing taps, but sometimes a thing calls to you and you just have to answer the call. This is the opposite of the white blanket; all gossamer lightness but deliciously warm for all that. It's on our bed at the moment and keeps our feet toasty when the temperature drops in the small hours.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIoOiNoc1fMxNdqnDWLbtVYzsq0sQtQX_kVJ-5MQwavnveTxVJZzxGQyBLqg5GbluZT8SwnndaOI-ZpdqMvJIi8Ftx-iTzq4xUAFzqmNbcUMxAyHMv5FapFG3REXS7-PwTZIP1A39XCg/s1600/DSC_1076.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIoOiNoc1fMxNdqnDWLbtVYzsq0sQtQX_kVJ-5MQwavnveTxVJZzxGQyBLqg5GbluZT8SwnndaOI-ZpdqMvJIi8Ftx-iTzq4xUAFzqmNbcUMxAyHMv5FapFG3REXS7-PwTZIP1A39XCg/s640/DSC_1076.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
And then there is my blanket. It's really not there yet. In fact it's still a fairly random collection of squares. But if I squint my eyes and ignore all the threads forget about how many hundreds more grannies I need to do to get it to the size I want, then I can almost see that it will be a blanket some day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd1nkra7XZYqudW7Nu_F10JkceelzYtpNGBP2AO9c0ceYcc01mzXvJRX3hiF1VquqBNGIvGvyd9SJhzRzBiHtszZPcbDDHxfC1G7wA4xu5zeiQJJkl0_xiP2z2CBe9h2s4oHjnSYbbHw/s1600/DSC_1093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd1nkra7XZYqudW7Nu_F10JkceelzYtpNGBP2AO9c0ceYcc01mzXvJRX3hiF1VquqBNGIvGvyd9SJhzRzBiHtszZPcbDDHxfC1G7wA4xu5zeiQJJkl0_xiP2z2CBe9h2s4oHjnSYbbHw/s640/DSC_1093.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm trying to be good and do a granny a day, encouraged by the lovely Annie and Laura of <a href="http://nimblefingersandsteadyeyebrows.blogspot.com/2012/01/granny-day.html">Nimble Fingers and Steady Eyebrows</a>. And I've been pretty good so far and reckon on about 5 a week. But we'll see. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibFBt8hvEWU_3ZNhT7wGOOVkPmWNCTKlO673zeRXACYxWLTGiCrK7lpeCUndCrmiihCt0lNk6H07OxhyxKh4R9ZXQk5p8eNJ1kFRUhSUTFawDy9SAF80ghhayq_7J1H3VoIQlv_rewLA/s1600/DSC_1092.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibFBt8hvEWU_3ZNhT7wGOOVkPmWNCTKlO673zeRXACYxWLTGiCrK7lpeCUndCrmiihCt0lNk6H07OxhyxKh4R9ZXQk5p8eNJ1kFRUhSUTFawDy9SAF80ghhayq_7J1H3VoIQlv_rewLA/s640/DSC_1092.jpg" width="432" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm also trying not to be too daunted by how big the bed is compared to each little square! Maybe it'll be done by next winter.<br />

Last weekend, I realised I'd been blogging a whole year. Wowee. I had no idea when I started whether I'd have anything to say. Or if I'd even maintain my interest in learning how to do things I'd never done before. But I have loved everything about the whole process. I've loved learning how to do new things. I've loved reading about you lovely people that I'd never otherwise come into contact with. And most of all, I have loved knowing that you are out there cheering me on in my still small creative endeavours.<br />
<br />
I know it's traditional on the anniversary of a blog to have a giveaway of a lovely thing made by the blogger. But I thought you deserved a bit more than that (maybe next year). So, it hit me that I could give away a book to celebrate. (Any excuse for a legitimate break in the book diet.) It needed to be a special book. And a crafty book. One that would make you oooh and aaah, but that you might not splash out on yourself. So, I thought this might be just the ticket.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimx1j3_2_EsqhV5gIKV8dKMrHt4GNZJBMV6EY1WqaZs_02LPyyw31-qOzRNApIeSulJaIrPo-dLEXWxtH3DKJE_BP_tJkqdNZfKVJ5ZjtgxbDwmZHRtdl3BWqv7pMbI5HY9rElGri2Lg/s1600/DSC_1074.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimx1j3_2_EsqhV5gIKV8dKMrHt4GNZJBMV6EY1WqaZs_02LPyyw31-qOzRNApIeSulJaIrPo-dLEXWxtH3DKJE_BP_tJkqdNZfKVJ5ZjtgxbDwmZHRtdl3BWqv7pMbI5HY9rElGri2Lg/s640/DSC_1074.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I got a copy with a subscription to Mollie Makes. And now I want everyone to have one. This book is beautiful. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg66cWaKtWUZQPg6HQl-lQUYyG0zh4TozjGRzXBJzPo1UOWP9OqjSDtBA7UD9CUVNNZgFILk5bgtlkYj7Od2ZSfyRkW0dNek5QH5NsM1-bRs3WnoFv5EMz8OLyqDOWmRmFx7iaX-6WNJg/s1600/mosaic564b4ffcf9b249a253ff7a03e60581e546f89d53.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg66cWaKtWUZQPg6HQl-lQUYyG0zh4TozjGRzXBJzPo1UOWP9OqjSDtBA7UD9CUVNNZgFILk5bgtlkYj7Od2ZSfyRkW0dNek5QH5NsM1-bRs3WnoFv5EMz8OLyqDOWmRmFx7iaX-6WNJg/s640/mosaic564b4ffcf9b249a253ff7a03e60581e546f89d53.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you don't sew, I guarantee that it will make you want to. If you do sew (and you don't already own the book), you will definitely want to make everything in it. Immediately. If you can sew a bit, it will make you want to have a go. It has beautifully illustrated step-by-step instructions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I do hope you like it. If you'd like the chance to own the book, all you need to do is leave me a comment. It would be nice if you could follow me but you don't have to. If you'd like to blog about the giveaway, come back and let me know that you have and I'll add your name twice. I'd love to know what you think works most about NKK and what you'd like to see more of. If you remember to include that in your comments that would be fab but I won't exclude you if you don't. In short, I'd love to hear from you. Oh yes, and I'll choose a winner on Saturday 11 February so you can leave a comment on this post any time up until then.<br />
<br />
Thank you for all your support over the last year. Not to put too fine a point on it, the last twelve months has been a challenge in ways that I don't write about here, but it had been delightful to have a place to escape to. That you choose to read what I have to say and comment on my blog is truly amazing to me. <br />

When I was little, we had an old electric blanket box that lived on top of a wardrobe in the spare room. Every now and again, my Mum would take it down and we'd go through the piles and piles of photos inside. My Dad, rail thin with winged glasses and a pipe in his mouth, standing next to his first car, my Mum in satin at a dinner dance, photos of my sisters and me when we were babies. I remember one of my sisters, smiling and dressed in matching purple crimpline (it was the 70s), and me between them looking worried in a check dress. Apparently, I hadn't wanted the nice man to take my photo and had had a hissy fit. In among the prints were the negatives. We'd hold them up to the light and look at the world in miniature, full of light and shadow. I thought it was magic. <br />
<br />
For years, long after digital cameras arrived, I persisted with film, much the same way people kept their record collections after CDs came along. But, when we moved to Africa, I traded in my film camera (oh, the folly) because I knew the heat and dust would do no good and the development facilites would be poor. Now, I don't think twice most days about film. I love the liberation of taking a chance with my photographs, knowing that the duff ones will disappear with the click of a button. I think I'm the better photographer for it. But today, the luddite in me can't help but lament the passing of Kodak. Was it arrogance that made them think that they didn't need to keep up with the change in how we take photos? Or, rightly or wrongly, did they think this was all a passing phase? Will we go back to film like some people are with vinyl? What do you reckon?<br />
<br />

<br />
Incidentally, when my cousin was at school, her English teacher asked the class to write out the words of a song that meant a lot to them and bring it into read. The first few lines of this strike me as the perfect response.<br />

Hello everybody,<br />
<br />
Hope you all had a lovely weekend. We are having the most marvellous weather at the moment. High blue skies and crisp cold days. I just love it when it's like this. <br />
<br />
I have discovered the secret to a tidying up. Have visitors come to stay. We had a friend to visit on Saturday, which meant that instead of mess in every room, the chaos is now semi contained. So, at long last, I have some before and after photos for you.<br />
<br />
You will remember the kitchen from a few months ago.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiigNtqN6-hF55yihN-srtbsQij73UBIyUo-yztH2Tbk1m-QZ9cKf6sDl8U8ddtmCKn1npujO1S00RtoMmDFUVpLvimGs4DfrFlCdZbncSxuZLpMniiIDuaHMl2uGLzOdqzYPbggnl1vA/s1600/mosaic7b00162346e5b14cef315b30d389ec53677825d0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiigNtqN6-hF55yihN-srtbsQij73UBIyUo-yztH2Tbk1m-QZ9cKf6sDl8U8ddtmCKn1npujO1S00RtoMmDFUVpLvimGs4DfrFlCdZbncSxuZLpMniiIDuaHMl2uGLzOdqzYPbggnl1vA/s640/mosaic7b00162346e5b14cef315b30d389ec53677825d0.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There was also a dining room next door.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia2JEF013kbYzhMEQMEb37fUJa1lSWa5V23PrXfDOmdVgkVYntBIVB1h344BDnFGYooVxd0Hao7369QJE2Dy2bkbuRPumlGvR9wJUWmyT6Z0zOmE_5vlGCceocsLKOGI6lsOUZyWNVNQ/s1600/IMG_2056.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia2JEF013kbYzhMEQMEb37fUJa1lSWa5V23PrXfDOmdVgkVYntBIVB1h344BDnFGYooVxd0Hao7369QJE2Dy2bkbuRPumlGvR9wJUWmyT6Z0zOmE_5vlGCceocsLKOGI6lsOUZyWNVNQ/s320/IMG_2056.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So we knocked the two rooms into one. (Glad I wasn't around at the time...)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilQMslz3qikr2inY4Dn-g2QiN5Ab5vM1i079mTday78i13vl9yDn2SAU7nhAC3Jq0cSue_UkNhsj4S2OI4adeusSzaCY9r2OLhgW7xiWVvPUX_SnpnuQcAibC4xljkCEdiob4bIQkwhw/s1600/DSC_0535.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilQMslz3qikr2inY4Dn-g2QiN5Ab5vM1i079mTday78i13vl9yDn2SAU7nhAC3Jq0cSue_UkNhsj4S2OI4adeusSzaCY9r2OLhgW7xiWVvPUX_SnpnuQcAibC4xljkCEdiob4bIQkwhw/s640/DSC_0535.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And this is the kitchen now.<br />

<br />
Like it? Not bad, eh? I change my mind on a minute by minute basis as to what I like best about it. But I keep coming back to the pantry. Really, it's just a walk in cupboard that used to house a hulk of a warm air heating system. But to me it's a pantry. No more rooting around in cupboards among the out of date tins. No, no. Now, I am a domestic goddess. Yes, indeed.<br />
<br />
Not sure I ever showed you the sitting room, complete with '60s fireplace. <br />
<br />

This is what it looked like yesterday. (Next to where I stood we're still working on some shelving.)<br />

I don't know about you, but for me, it's the unexpected transition views that make me stop and look when I move around a new space. This is the view from the kitchen into the dining area at one end of the living room.<br />

My books. Almost all in one place. Hurray! And I get to stare at them bleary-eyed as I eat my porridge in the morning. Nothing if not inspiring.</div>

Hello everybody,<br />
<br />
Thanks so much for all your lovely messages. It had been so long that I was a bit worried you'd all have moved on. Do you ever feel like that after a break? Like if you haven't blogged for awhile, everyone will just lose interest? Anyway, so glad you didn't.<br />
<br />
I know I said I'd show you photos of the house, and they will come I promise. But the truth is that no room is photogenic enough at the moment. We've been in the house exactly a month today, but somehow, it's all still up in a heap. We didn't plan enough storage (plenty of sockets, but no cupboards) so we still have boxes everywhere with nowhere to unpack them into. And in many, many of those boxes, there are books. Fortunately, the chippie had now built in some shelves and we're busy painting them, so soon, very early one morning before the chaos of the day sets in, I will have photos for you.<br />
<br />
And in the meantime, I thought I'd distract you with images of our voyage home. <br />

First, I have to tell you that this was the perfect way to leave New York. No rushing to the airport, no taking your shoes off and emptying your pockets. No excess baggage payments. No cramped seats and dodgy food. Instead, this was the view as we sailed out on the East River.</div>

<br /></div>
The photos are a bit wobbly. Partly because of the low light, but also because it was freezing. It rained soon after these were taken and I wept with the sky as we left New York.<br />
<br />
But the weather didn't stay bad for long, and it was all about snatches of brisk walks on deck squashed between the endless bouts of eating that we discovered is what a transatlantic crossing is all about. Cooked breakfast, morning coffee and treats, lunch, afternoon cream tea, pre-dinner canapes, and dinner. <br />
But waddling slowly on...<br />
<br />

<br />
An out of season voyage is something is like being at a coastal town out of season. Some things are packed away, or not used as much as they would be in the heat of mid summer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha50gANbNTav7RU_nGnhOxBPfux5f1SSrxrU84Mow_2UeZ6u7wUGOxRmYiKFNGgq56jt7CI_BogVSh-av2-FKTYpMuKuh297X88yqgkfs2OKJrUjj6I4Cry7MoIJEvOcLfbTOEV-YSvg/s1600/DSC_0838.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha50gANbNTav7RU_nGnhOxBPfux5f1SSrxrU84Mow_2UeZ6u7wUGOxRmYiKFNGgq56jt7CI_BogVSh-av2-FKTYpMuKuh297X88yqgkfs2OKJrUjj6I4Cry7MoIJEvOcLfbTOEV-YSvg/s640/DSC_0838.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZUdsDNRSVVg7Jjoxe8YImDVEZBPv6_ufXmX8tDyienfE9VDcJ_e0YEvkzITmHrVfF8X4XvTvDlnCCjmH2x4CqDYhWdYYOfM_xUc4pxfA90eFhyyExT2mP2nOjRQ1YVQjmt1n6r5KFA/s1600/DSC_0847.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZUdsDNRSVVg7Jjoxe8YImDVEZBPv6_ufXmX8tDyienfE9VDcJ_e0YEvkzITmHrVfF8X4XvTvDlnCCjmH2x4CqDYhWdYYOfM_xUc4pxfA90eFhyyExT2mP2nOjRQ1YVQjmt1n6r5KFA/s640/DSC_0847.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
But I actually liked it that way. I had nothing to compare it to, this being my first (and probably only) cruise. I suspect I am not the cruising type. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9L3aZrtMMNZfydG2RqR-l7iMCy8FpEa-4h1TcRdRuDn8n2nSGB3-9wIxEu46pIihdvg-MfE_mkgSu5ISLCG2rTkiYg2wZOMwW7ncMFqBMBbxqqHpS6lj7c7gYli84St65vqcj9t6Xnw/s1600/DSC_0852.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9L3aZrtMMNZfydG2RqR-l7iMCy8FpEa-4h1TcRdRuDn8n2nSGB3-9wIxEu46pIihdvg-MfE_mkgSu5ISLCG2rTkiYg2wZOMwW7ncMFqBMBbxqqHpS6lj7c7gYli84St65vqcj9t6Xnw/s640/DSC_0852.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But this was just lovely. Seven days of rest and relaxation with lots to do. Or nothing. Mostly, we did nothing. Oh, we made a token effort and and played some deck games once or twice.<br />

Oh, and we saw dolphins a few times (too quick to photograph). But mostly, we just read a little, walked a little, slept and ate lots. And contemplated the enormity of the change the year would bring. <br />

All in all, a very fitting end to our life in New York.<br />

Wowee! That turned out to be a much longer break than I thought. Hello everybody! Happy New Year! I've missed everyone. I got a lovely email from a reader today (hello Kathy) asking how life was in the House of NKK and it finally gave me the push I needed to get back at it.<br />
<br />
Where, oh where, to start? I haven't even looked at my blog in the last two months, so logging in today and seeing 5th Avenue in the late Autumn light from my last post made me realise again what a long, long way Mr. P and I have come since last I wrote. So much to catch up on. And I promise I will come soon to the voyage home and the House by the Sea and our new adventure. But I've just looked back at some of the photos and instead I wondered if you'd like a tour of our old apartment before it was all packed up? (If you're anything like me, there's nothing quite like a nose around someone's house.)<br />
<br />
Okay, so we had an open plan living/dining kitchen area which, even now that I see it again, I can't quite believe we lived in (those views!).<br />

Today is the New York Marathon. If you knew me, you would know that for all sorts of reasons, I will never, ever, run a marathon. But <a href="http://meme-rose.blogspot.com/">MeMe Rose</a> has. In New York. And MeMe Rose loves New York even more than I do, if that's possible. Now, she's not running the marathon this year, but promises to again. So, I thought that before I leave New York, I would go once more around the block for MeMe Rose and show you some of the window shopping I did on my way home from work the other day.<br />
<br />
First, the window of Saks. I have written before about the ogling I do as I pass on the bus every day. Here's what they have in their windows right now. (Apologies again for the eye phone photos).<br />
