Making Winter - A tale of three blankets

As no doubt you already know, Silverpebble and Thrifty Household have come up with the wonderful idea of sharing what we like about winter to banish any signs of gloom in the months of short days and long nights.  For me, winter is all about cosiness.  And cosiness requires blankets.

I have lots of catching up to do with all the posts I have in my head.  For ages, I've been wanting to show you this loveliness.

My Mum found this blanket in a charity shop and gave it to me just before Christmas.  Isn't it just beautiful?  It's in pristine condition and made of cotton, so we bunged it into the washing machine to get rid of the old lady whiff and it came out fresh and spotless. It makes me smile every time I go into that room.  And it's got a lovely weightiness to it that you need sometimes in a blanket.

You may remember that I wrote about coveting a blanket from The White Company here.  Well, they had a sale awhile back, just at the point when the House by the Sea was at its most chaotic.  Now, I had no business at all buying a blanket at that point when we were still at the stage of choosing taps, but sometimes a thing calls to you and you just have to answer the call.  This is the opposite of the white blanket; all gossamer lightness but deliciously warm for all that.  It's on our bed at the moment and keeps our feet toasty when the temperature drops in the small hours.

And then there is my blanket.  It's really not there yet.  In fact it's still a fairly random collection of squares.  But if I squint my eyes and ignore all the threads forget about how many hundreds more grannies I need to do to get it to the size I want, then I can almost see that it will be a blanket some day.

I'm trying to be good and do a granny a day, encouraged by the lovely Annie and Laura of Nimble Fingers and Steady Eyebrows.  And I've been pretty good so far and reckon on about 5 a week.  But we'll see.

I'm also trying not to be too daunted by how big the bed is compared to each little square!  Maybe it'll be done by next winter.

  1. I can see how that blanket called to you - it is absolutely to die for! I have some leftover kid mohair yarn which I may just have a play with to see if I could recreate those gorgeous fluffy circles. Keep going with the granny squares, it's amazing how quickly they build up. Loving another little sneak peek into your house - it's looking fab. Enjoy your weekend. xx

  3. Lots of beautiful blankets, and what a charity shop find.

I am avoiding laying the squares out on the bed now as it always makes it look like an endless task. I have discovered if I lay them spaciously on the floor I can pretend I am much further along than I actually am. We are all going to have beautiful blankets soon, well perhaps by christmas! - Annie

  5. The squares look so lovely all laid out together like that. A blanket really is a labour of love, isn't it?! Mine is so far from finished, but I am already thinking about the next one I want to make. It is like some sort of compulsion :) Laura x

  7. There is something about a blanket... Last year I made five blankets and I vowed that I was going to give it a rest but I cant! Have started my first blanket of the year and your beautiful seaside squares are making me think about the next one. It is going to be granny squares and I am loving those colours... I wondering - how many blankets are too many in a house?

  8. Love a bit of blanketagement.

Don't get disheartened, there's always a point when you're making a blanket where you want to throw things and yell that it's NEVER going to be finished but you just have to keep plugging away. Love the idea of doing one square a day.

  12. What's not to love about blankets? Especially today - brrrr! I started a knitted square blanket almost two years ago and was just wondering what to do about it as I seemed to have stalled with over half the squares still to make.

  13. I am trying to embrace winter this year too, and appreciate it's good points, and not be constantly wishing for Spring. I found last year it seemed to go on forever, like summer holidays when you are a kid.So I like your idea, and I love your blankets. Yes I remember lusting after that grey one myself, good for you for getting it in the sale despite all that was going on. I am sure that you are glad you did. Your own blanket will be gorgeous when it is done, the colours are so fresh and vibrant! The white coverlet is really beautiful. I have one myself which is Victorian, but it is in need of repair. Lots of love to you, Linda x
